TORONTO—There’s some good news for movie lovers—theatres are opening back up very soon.

According to a release by Cineplex, theatres across B.C., Saskatchewan, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland will re-open on Friday July 3. But the movie theatre experience will be quite different.

“Cineplex’s top priority has always been the health and safety of its employees and guests and creating a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment.”—Release by Cineplex

Theatres across the province will have enhanced safety and cleaning measures as well as procedures to allow for physical distancing for both, inside and outside the auditorium.

The new measures include launching reserved seating in all auditoriums across the country—seating options will automatically be blocked off to allow for physical distancing between guests; reduced capacity in all auditoriums; enhanced cleaning practices throughout their facilities, with particular focus on high-contact surfaces, restrooms and seats; only debit, credit and giftcard payments will be accepted; food offerings will be limited to popcorn and other core concessions; PPE will be provided to staff; hand sanitizer will be available throughout facilities.

“Entertaining is what we do best, and we simply can’t wait to safely welcome guests back to our theatres.”— Ellis Jacob, President and CEO, Cineplex

Cineplex will be offering $5 tickets and showing popular new releases such as Bloodshot, The Invisible Man, Sonic The Hedgehog, Jumanji: The Next Level, Bad Boys for Life, Harley Quinn:Birds of Prey, The Way Back and I still Believe, to welcome movie lovers back. In select markets, theatres will be showing a curated selection of films from director Quentin Tarantino.

Alberta will see the re-opening of six of its theatres this Friday, June 26, while the rest are set to re-open on July 3. At this time Cineplex says that VIP Cinemas and play structures in Clubhouse auditoriums will remain closed for the time being.
