Regional District and City team up on wildfire prevention campaign

PRINCE GEORGE–Making you fire smart.

That is what the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, the City of Prince George, and FireSmart B.C. are teaming up to do with a public education campaign. The summer campaign aims at educating homeowners and raise awareness of wildfire risks.

“When it comes to being FireSmart, education is everything. From landscaping best practices to fire-resilient building materials, learning what you can do today to protect against wildfires can save homes and lives tomorrow.”–Anita de Dreu, Emergency Services Coordinator with the Regional District

The campaign will highlight simple ways the public can help reduce or prevent damage or loss from wildfires to their properties. The District says that the best place to start is with your non-combustible zone. The non-combustible zone is the first 1.5 metres which immediately surrounds your home. Regularly cleaning the area of needles and debris buildup, along with the removal of all fuel sources leaves nothing for embers to light.

Other tips include: regular removal of debris from gutters, placing firewood and propane tanks 10-30 metres from your house, keeping grass healthy and cut to less than 10 cm, removing bark mulch, talking to an insurance provider about wildfire damage, and removing any windblown leaves from under decks.
