How to celebrate Canada Day in 2020

PRINCE GEORGE – Sizzle some back bacon, crack open a cold one (as long as you’re 19+), and dawn your red and white!

While COVID-19 has forced the cancellation of practically every single Canaday Day-related event this year, the Prince George Multicultural Heritage Society of Prince George says there is still a number of activities and events that you, as well as your family, can partake in on July 1st.

“This year is the 55th anniversary of our Canadian Flag. It’s the 40th anniversary of our national anthem. There’s all kinds of reasons that we could celebrate,” said Executive Director Marlies Greulich.

The Prince George Multicultural Heritage Society has been the organization responsible for the organizing of the Canada Day Festival in the city for the past 46 years.

Greulich says there are numerous suggestions for how one can celebrate Canada Day on the Canadian Heritage website.

Typically, the Prince George Canada Day Celebration would be taking place in Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park. However, due to the pandemic, those celebrations, as well as the fireworks, have been cancelled.

Instead, all major celebrations have been shifted virtually with Canadian Heritage putting on a series of events throughout the course of the day. Serena Ryder will co-host with Pierre-Yves Lord for both the day-time and evening shows, which will showcase a list of award-winning artists like Alannis Morissette, Paul Brandt, Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, and Alan Doyle.

There are also a series of virtual events being held within our province.

The Exploration Place will also be taking their Canada Day celebration online, as well as holding colouring contests. Information can be found on their website.

“We can celebrate our country’s 153rd birthday, no matter what,” says Greulich.

Canadian Heritage will also be putting on a virtual firework display. At 10 p.m., local time, point your smartphone or tablet to the sky and a three-minute show displaying 3D fireworks will begin. The augmented reality experience will give you the same visual and sound effects as a real fireworks display.
