Churches start to resume services

PRINCE GEORGE – The Salvation Army held its first service this past Sunday since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re very excited about being able to bring people back together,” explains Major Neil Wilkinson.

He says churches often are a source of calm and solace in times of extreme stress and isolation. But in order to accommodate the Ministerial Oorders of the Provincial Health Office, the seating has been rearranged to allow for 50 people or fewer. Masks are handed out at the door for those who wish to wear one, but those who plan to sing, the mask is mandatory. And invitations are sent out to congregation members.

The picture is similar at the Gateway Church, where the seating accommodates 35 people. But they had been offering online services for a while, with three live services. And then Sunday mornings, there are two live services at nine and 11, as well as online services at those times. But they have been offering online services for several months, well before the COVID pandemic.

“We were a bit fortunate. We had a lot things in place before COVID hit,” explains Brad Crick, the Director of Operations. “We were actually streaming our services live and online for six or eight weeks before COVID hit. So it’s like someone knew.”

But Major Wilkinson says this is likely the new normal for a long while yet.

“We’re preparing to live this way for at least the next couple of years.”
