Pool Decisions

Decisions pending around the new pool

PRINCE GEORGE – It was something the City had been waiting for, for years. And late last week, the federal government approved $10 million in funding for the replacement of the Four Seasons Leisure Pool.

“I think it took a long time because there was a process we had to go through in the grant application. We have to justify the request, justify the project and we had to find the key piece of that project that was really unique,” explains Mayor Lyn Hall. “And the uniqueness of it is that it’s going to be heated through the downtown District Energy System.”

However, the successful application has lead to Mayor and Council having some decisions to make.

“Where the decision is to be made is what to do with $10 million dollars,” says Kris Dalio, Director of Finance. “There was a referendum in 2017 and [the City] was authorized to borrow $35 million for the pool. So we could either take this $10 million and expand the scope and, perhaps, have more amenities in the pool. Or we could stick to the $35 million and use the $10 million to offset the borrowing we would otherwise do.”

Mayor Hall says that discussion will not take place until later this year, as part of budget discussions. However, he says the project is still on schedule to have shovels in the ground this year.
