Turpel-Lafond begins investigation into Indigenous-specific racism in health care
VICTORIA – An independent investigation into Indigenous-specific racism in British Columbia’s health care system was launched on July 9, 2020, by former judge and provincial child advocate Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond.
On June 19 (2020), Turpel-Lafond was appointed by Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, after highly disturbing allegations of racism in B.C. emergency rooms were reported.
“In the last number of weeks as I’ve been able to pull apart what’s in that file, hear directly from Indigenous people, what I’m hearing is about concerns that are in all regions of British Columbia, in all health authorities,” stated Turpel-Lafond on Thursday.
She has now assembled her team for the investigation, established her terms of reference and launched a survey to collect and assess the experiences of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people when they access health care.
