New invasive plant taking over

PRINCE GEORGE – The City’s integrated pest management specialist says there is a new culprit in town. Mountain bluet, sometimes called blue buttons, has a pretty blue flower and is very easy to grow.

But that’s a big part of the problem.

That’s what makes it an invasive plant and it is showing up all over the city. The plant started ats a garden ornamental but it has escaped the confines of a groomed and controlled garden. The City’s integrated pest management folks are asking members of the public to be very careful in how they dispose of the plant and they are asking for residents’ help.

“They’re not a legislated weed, but we know that they’re invasive,” says Claire Watkins, the City’s Integrated Pest Management’s Environmental Technician. “And we’re starting to get a lot of reports of them and we need help. Invasive plants are taking off in a big way and we’re using [the City’s] resources to go after the legislated ones.”

If you can catch the plant before it blooms, pull it out, but if it is bloom, the plant needs to be disposed of at the landfill.
