How to stay safe when driving your motorized wheelchair

Jul 13, 2020 | 11:29 AM

FORT St. JOHN—RCMP in Fort St. John are reminding motorized wheelchair drivers of the rules of the road and simple safety tips in order to stay safe, as weather gets warmer.

Drivers of motorized wheelchairs are asked to follow the same rules as pedestrians, as well as the basic rules of the road which include coming to a full stop at intersections and for all traffic control devices, including stop signs. Motorized wheelchairs can be driven legally on sidewalks and on the side of the road. A driver’s license, registration or insurance are not needed to operate one.

As for some safety tips, RCMP want motorized wheelchair drivers to ensure they are familiar with the ins and outs of their scooter, ride only where it’s safe, not to assume that traffic can see you or will yield to you, and wear reflective clothing.
