PRINCE GEORGE— Last week’s fire at a local motel has been deemed to have been deliberately set.

On Wednesday, July 8, emergency services responded to a report of a fire on the 900 block of Victoria St. at an occupied motel. Three people were found dead after the fire had been extinguished. RCMP have confirmed the three people found dead in the fire were all adults.

The fire was deemed suspicious and the Prince George RCMP’s Serious Crime Section assisted by the Prince George Fire/Rescue, the B.C. Office of the Fire Commissioner, and North District RCMP began their investigation. Now, investigators believe it was arson.

On Saturday, July 11, PG RCMP located and arrested a suspect as part of the investigation; that person has since been released without charge, pending further investigation. PG RCMP say that they are unable to comment any further at this time but are taking “all necessary steps to advance this investigation in the interest of public safety.”

Prince George RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit has also opened a Criminal Negligence investigation after reports that the fire alarm did not sound. At this time the B.C Coroners Service is conducting an investigation to determine who died and how, where, when and by what means they came to their unexpected deaths. The identities of the deceased will not be released due to privacy.

Anyone who may have information about this investigation is asked to contact PG RCMP at 250-561-3300 or Crime Stoppers, online or at 1-800-222-8477
