VICTORIA— 21 new cases of COVID-19, including three epi-linked ones, were reported in today’s COVID-19 daily update.

Today (July 16) marks 37 days without a new reported case of COVID-19 in the northern Health region.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 1,028
  • Fraser Health: 1,667
  • Vancouver Island Health: 136
  • Interior Health: 223
  • Northern Health: 65
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 51

The new number of cases brings B.C.’s total to 3,170 test positive cases; 192 of those are active.

No new deaths were reported in today’s update. B.C.’s death toll remains at 189. No new health care or community outbreaks were reported. There remain three active outbreaks in the health care system, 400 residents have been affected by COVID-19 and 255 staff.

There are now 27 COVID-19 cases linked to the outbreak in Kelowna. Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, provided an update on information collected from their sero-survey, which revealed that COVID-19 infection rates have remained under 1 per cent in B.C.

The sero-survey (sero-survey looks for antibodies in blood) also revealed that there have been anywhere between 16,000-17,000 people infected with COVID-19 over the past six months. Although this is the case, Dr. Henry wants to remind British Columbians that this doesn’t mean you have the anti-bodies for the virus and can’t contract it. Henry highlighted the importance of continued work by British Columbians to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19.

“We don’t yet know if having these anti-bodies means you are protected…that you are immune to this virus.”—Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer

Once again, Bonnie Henry became emotional as she spoke about today’s B.C. Coroners report which showed the highest number of illicit drug deaths in B.C. for the second month in a row.

“This ongoing crisis reminds us to put as much time and effort, and kindness and compassion into caring for people who use drugs as we have been successful to responding to the COVID-19 crisis,” said Henry with emotion.

2,789 people have recovered from COVID-19.
