Poll shows majority of Prince George residents not surprised by number of pot shops in town

PRINCE GEORGE — Two-thirds of respondents to CKPG’s weekly poll aren’t surprised that six pot shops are now operating in the city.

This despite the fact the first opened a year ago and more are in the pipeline.

The owner of Prince George”s first – Grasshopper Retail Inc. – figures there’s enough demand in the marketplace for many more.

“I think Prince George is a pretty vibrant city. It has a lot of areas where there might not be cannabis stores yet where we’ll be getting some in the future,” says Joe Postnikoff, who thinks Kamloops is a place to compare ourselves to.

“Kamloops has 10 open cannabis stores right now and they think they have room for another five until they are sort of maxed out. So, that’s where I think Prince George is very similar in that respect.”

So how’s Grasshopper Retail Inc. doing approximately one year since it opened its doors?

“We’re very fortunate to have been the first store in Prince George,” notes Postnikoff. “We had a very successful first year. We’re definitely trying to create more jobs and we’re just really excited lots of people want to come to Grasshopper.”

CKPG’s poll was unscientific and asked residents: Are you surprised at the number of cannabis stores in Prince George? We had over 1,000 responses on our Facebook page and our website, ckpgtoday.ca. 65 per cent said yes, while 35 per cent said no.
