Kings put bow on 19/20 season with Annual General Meeting

On the ice, the 2019-2020 season wasn’t the most successful for the Spruce Kings following their BCHL and Doyle Cup Championship the year prior.

However, it was revealed at the clubs Annual General Meeting Monday night, that the year was good financially for the club as they drastically reduced their long term debt.

“Financially wise, we are in a better state than we were in the previous year,” shared Spruce Kings President David Keough.

“The Showhome helps us out quite a bit. The lottery, having that ability to do that helps us out. Without that, it’s 80% of our budget and it is a big thing. It’s good for us and hopefully the next couple of years we will be in a better spot.”

Cash and gaming income was also up this past season. Cash is up over $76,000, while gaming income saw a $97,022 increase.

Marketing net income was also up by $24,182.

However, they did see a decrease in 50/50 revenue due to the shorter season, but the club did notice pot sizes were larger this past season compared to years further back.

There were also declines in hockey operations, income from the concession, and liquor sales, but this is due to a much shorter season compared to 2018-2019.

Now that the board has put a bow on the 2019-2020 season, preparation for next year is underway, but due to Covid-19 and the delayed start to the campaign, it makes things a little challenging.

“It’s really just waiting and see. We have relied a lot on Mike (Hawes). Mike has been heavily involved at the league level with the discussions and Mike has been in the league for 15 years and has some great insight. For the board though, it is just waiting and seeing what happens,” added Keough.

Despite the uncertainty, the 2020-2021 season will look much different for Spruce Kings fans when they do plan on attending the game due to social distancing, and that will also pose a challenge for the team as they will be forced to spread season ticket holders out from their usual couple of sections.

More details regarding that will come out closer to the season, but overall the organization is thankful for the community support this past-season and during this difficult time.
