RV sales through the roof amid COVID

PRINCE GEORGE – An unexpected consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic: once the restrictions on travel were lifted, RV sales went through the roof.

“The first five days of May, we still did nothing. After the first week of May, it just broke loose and we’ve just been running ever since,” says Sid McKnight, Sales Manager with NR Motors.

And he says sales have surpassed last year’s numbers.

“Yes, there are first-time buyers and when we say first-time buyers, they’re not all young. There are lots of older people who are first-time buyers, too. They’ve just never tried it. And now, they can’t leave the country, so they’re trying RV’ing.”

But there’s a hitch.

Because of the pandemic, the factories that build the RV’s and trailers as well as the bell and whistles that going in them didn’t manufacture any of them.

“There’s a huge backlog of orders in every segment of the industry. As in awning parts, air conditioners, anything you can think of that goes in an RV. Everything is built by somebody else and they’re all behind.”

And he notes, this is still early summer. With the weather expected to reach more summer norms, who knows what’ll happen?
