Regional District suggests FireSmarting your home this long weekend

PRINCE GEORGE–With warmer weather comes the increased risk of a wildfire and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George is once again reminding residents to FireSmart their homes, especially as there is an extra day to the weekend this long weekend.

The best place for any homeowner to start is with their non-combustible zone–the first 1.5 metres immediately surrounding the home, attached garage, decks or patios. Regular home and yar maintenance, cleaning out crevices where needles and debris build-up and removing all fuel sources, will leave nothing for embers to ignite.

Other tips:

  • Clear debris from gutters and under decks
  • Move firewood and propane tanks at least 10 metres away from your house
  • Keep grass healthy and cut to less than 10 centimetres – fires travel quickly through long grass
  • Don’t use bark mulch to landscape – it’s highly flammable and can lead fire to your door
  • Talk to an insurance provider about wildfires and ensure your loss insurance is adequate
