FORT FRASER — A woman is lucky to be alive following a dramatic rope rescue on the Fraser Mountain Trail just outside of Fort Fraser yesterday (July 29).

Nechako Valley Rescue were called out after a female hiker slipped off a trail and slid 15 metres down a slope and breaking her leg at around 3 p.m.

Prince George Search and Rescue assisted in the rescue which took about five-and-a-half-hours to complete.

“We spent a number of hours accessing the subject, then stabilizing her while the helicopter was en route from Prince George,” says Nechako Valley Search and Rescue Manager Chris Mushumanski.

He says after a assessment it was determined a rope rescue would be the best way to get the hiker to safety.

“We moved the subject up the mountainside to an area where a helicopter could access a volunteer who then extracted the hiker to Beaumont Provincial Park where the BC Ambulance Service transported the woman to hospital.”

Though the woman was seriously injured, Muskumanski says it was fortunate the woman was hiking with a group of people who had a cell phone with them and an emergency plan.

No other information about the injured hiker has been released.
