Fatal crash on Highway 16 just east of Smithers

SMITHERS — Update: RCMP say yesterday afternoon’s fatal collision involved a pickup truck and a cyclist.

Police say the cyclist, a 41-year-old Smithers man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and causal factors have not yet been determined. The highway has since reopened.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to call the Smithers RCMP at (250) 847-3233.

Earlier: North District RCMP says there’s been a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a vehicle four kilometres east of Smithers at Babine Lake Road.

Cpl. Madonna Saunderson confirms it happened at 3:15 p.m. this afternoon and has closed Highway 16 in both directions.

She says no other information regarding the crash is available at this time.

Drive BC estimates the highway won’t reopen until at least 10 p.m. tonight. There is no detour.
