TYH: The need for sunscreen is still here

Aug 18, 2020 | 4:57 PM

The weather outside was quite nice this past weekend, and the need for sunscreen was very much there. Summer hasn’t gone anywhere just yet, so the need for sunscreen is still very much with us, as UV Rays are much stronger in the spring and summer months.

“UV Rays can be harmful both causing sunburns and skin irritation, but can also lead to potential cancer, later on in life as well.”–Patrick Dinelle, Manager, Third Ave. Pharmacy

Dinelle says that when purchasing sunscreen, SPF means how long you can stay in the sun. “So with an SPF 15 that means you can stay in the sun fifteen times longer than you normally would,” says Dinelle. While you may be able to stay in the sun longer Dinelle says you still want to make sure you reapply consistently because sunscreen can wear off the skin.

Reapplication should be done every couple of hours (2-3), more consistently if you are sweating. As for whether or not Dinelle recommends using natural sunscreen, “with sunscreen you usually want to go with a really good brand get some good science behind it.”

“So I would stick to some higher-end brands, ask your pharmacist for one specifically for you and we can find one that can suit your needs.”––Patrick Dinelle, Manager, Third Ave. Pharmacy

While sunscreen does offer protection from the sun, Dinelle says covering up as much as possible and trying to do activities in the early morning or late evening, when the sun’s rays are not as strong, are the best ways to protect your skin.
