VANCOUVER–British Columbia has reached a total of 200 deaths to COVID-19, since the start of the pandemic.

Today’s update (Aug.20) saw an additional two deaths, totalling 200. In Northern B.C. there is one new case of COVID-19 for a total of 121 confirmed cases of the virus.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 1,526
  • Fraser Health: 2,533
  • Vancouver Island Health: 159
  • Interior Health: 411
  • Northern Health: 121
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 75

Provincially, 80 new cases were reported for a total of 4,825 test-positive cases since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. 780 cases are considered active at this time.

“We do continue to see new infections, the number at this time is relatively stable but we do continue to see them.”– Dr. Réka Gustafson, Deputy Provincial Health Officer

Dr. Gustafson says that there has been a slight and recent increase in infection in those 40-60 years of age, something she says they are monitoring as the virus can have a greater impact on older generations.

There are no new health-care facility outbreaks, for a total of nine currently active outbreaks. Dr. Gustafson mentioned that the COVID-19 cluster cases involved in the outbreak in Haida Gwaii have all recovered, however, that public health continues to monitor the outbreak and will announce once it has been declared over.

To date, there are eleven people in hospital, four of those are in ICU. 2,574 British Columbians who may have been exposed to COVID-19 are being monitored at the moment by public health. A total of 3,845 people have recovered from the virus.
