PRINCE GEORGE — The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Prince George Native Friendship Centre to be creative this year with its annual Back to School celebration.

Today, they’re holding a drive-thru in their 3rd Avenue parking to disburse 1000 backpacks with school supplies for the most vulnerable in our community.

Everyone is wearing masks and ensuring proper social distancing to ensure the safety of families and staff members.

“Well, it looks very different from the way it’s been the last five years in that we can’t have people come and gather,” said Executive Director Barb Ward-Burkitt. “So, we’re actually doing the program via drive-thru. So, we’ve got a plan in place and we’re hoping that it goes that way. But the bottom line is that it’s critically important that we be able to provide school supplies to many of the vulnerable people in our community.”

She says it’s the sixth year they’ve held the event and notes the need for help continues to grow noting that in 2015 they provided about a quarter (250) of the backpacks back then. But Ward-Burkitt says her and her staff love to do what they can to help.

“We’re so thrilled and honoured to be a part of this in our community.”
