How are you spending your money differently amidst the pandemic?: Home improvement on an uptick

Aug 21, 2020 | 3:24 PM

PRINCE GEORGE–This week we asked you “has COVID-19 allowed you to spend your money differently?” in our Facebook poll 80 per cent of voters said yes and 20 per cent said no.

A local contractor and home hardware store both say they’ve seen busy seasons.

“I think there were some people that were planning on taking Mexican vacations…now they’re sitting on some disposable income, and so it’s ‘let’s build a deck or do some kitchen renovations.'”–Garry Nielson, Retail Operations Manager, Rona Prince George

Nielson says that it all started with paint. Homeowners were looking for something to do while the weather was still cool, and as the weather warmed up people began fixing decks and buying patio supplies.

“I think our best month in the history of this store was May,” said Nielson, something that is out of the ordinary seeing that business doesn’t usually peak until August or September.

“We’ve been slammed. I think a lot of people aren’t spending money on big trips and they’re spending more time at home, so they’re looking around seeing their deck needing work or a fence…and they’re putting money into home improvement.”–Chris Hawes, Owner, Hawes Home Yard and Contracting

In the U.S. sales at Home Depots surged in their second quarter, earning $4.33-billion, up from $3.48 billion in the same quarter one year ago.
