TERRACE–BC Hydro is providing $10,000 in grants to support Skeena youth by funding projects focused on building the workforce of tomorrow, safety education, and developing smart energy ideas.

The funds are being provided through BC Hydro’s Community Grant program. BC Hydro offers both Grassroots Grants that provide up to $2,000 for local programs, and Broad Impact Grants that provide funding up to $10,000 for organizations that want to expand or develop a program in multiple communities.

The SkeenaWild Conservation Trust received an $8,000 grant towards the expansion of their education program which provides interactive classroom workshops and educational resources for K-12 students. The program currently reaches students in Terrace and Kitimat and will begin adding schools in Hazelton, Houston, Kitwanga, Witset, Prince Rupert, Smithers, and Telkwa. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) based education will help students learn to protect and conserve wild salmon populations and ecosystems in the Skeena Watershed.

The Upper Skeena Community Learning Society received $2,000 towards their Youth Works program, which provides part-time paid learning opportunities for youth to train to build their professional cooking skills.
