PRINCE GEORGE – Those in the demolition, construction, and land-clearing business may have to change the ways they get rid of their construction waste.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is in the process of starting an education campaign for construction business before they increase tipping fees on waste in 2021.

During most renovation or a new build, there are times when waste is created. This year the Regional District board approved an increase in tipping fees on certain types of construction waste, which includes loads of mixed waste.

According to the Regional District, Starting in January 2021, tipping fees will increase 50 percent for mixed loads of construction waste, concrete, and asphalt.

For the next 6 months, the district’s goal is to educate local contractors on material separation before they make their way to the landfill.

For some members of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association Northern B.C., the change may be problematic.

According to the Regional District in the past few years its seen an increase in the amount of demolition and construction waste entering the landfill.
