Spirits high for Wheelin’ Warriors ahead of Ride to Conquer Cancer

PRINCE GEORGE — This weekend, the Wheelin’ Warriors of the North will hit the road running, or cycling, for their big Ride to Conquer Cancer. The ride will run Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the team will start at 9am from the aquatic centre and ride to Miworth before coming back and spending some time in Pineview riding down Giscome Road and then Johnson Road and a few other areas before returning back home again. Then on Sunday, the team is planning to ride to Harold Mann Regional Park on Eaglet Lake.

The Wheelin’ Warriors of the North are still the third-highest raising team in BC, as is par for the course for the team who always finds themselves near the top of the province funding wise. They are currently around $67,000, largely due to the annual gala being cancelled. “That event was anticipated to bring in roughly $100,000 for the cause,” “said Karin Piché, Captain and Founder of the team. It is taken some creative fundraising initiatives to bring in the bucks.

“One of the best ones we’ve seen that is really going over well is the backyard comedians. Mike McGuire and Cody Malbeuf are showing up at backyards and if you’ve got a small group they will come and do a comedy show,” Ron Gallo, co-captain of Wheelin’ Warrior of the North, said.

That’s one of many initiatives going on to help raise money for a good cause. It’s something that those who benefit from the funding can’t say enough good things about.

“I was given a six percent chance of survival close to ten years ago and the technology that saved my life came from BC. I moved across the planet to be a part of the magic and it’s only possible because of people like the Wheelin’ Warriors who support the strategy to really be cutting-edge in technologies provided for cancer patients in the world,” explained James McLellan, a cancer survivor and healthcare worker in Prince George. “One hundred percent of the support from our community stays in our community. PGers are probably number one in the world for their giving. Phenomenal population here.”

Piché encourages anyone wanting to get involved to reach out, whether it be for riding, volunteering, or donating. More information on the team and how to donate can be found here.
