VICTORIA–Four new cases of COVID-19 were reported this afternoon (Aug.27) in the Northern Health region.

This brings the north to a total of 137 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 1,737
  • Fraser Health: 2,818
  • Vancouver Island Health: 173
  • Interior Health: 429
  • Northern Health: 137
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 78

Provincially, there are 68 new cases including, four epi-linked cases for a total of 5,372. One new death was reported for a total of 204 deaths in B.C. to COVID-19.

Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry announced that their COVID-19 updates will include suspect MIS-C cases in B.C. MIS-C is Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, something that can be related to COVID-19. At this time the province has seen eight suspected MIS-C cases. These cases are considered “suspect” due to the fact that when children were tested they did not test positive for COVID-19, did not have antibodies in their system, and had not come into contact with a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19.

“Most patients… recovered completely and that is the case with the eight people here in British Columbia…five are male and three are female…the median age was four years of age.”–Adrian Dix, B.C. Health Minister

Dr. Henry says that MIS-C cases will continue to be observed, even more so with the start of school.

One new community outbreak in Interior Health was also reported, at a construction site near Elkford, B.C. Henry says that the outbreak was not confirmed until workers had left the site and returned home. Out of the seven cases related to the outbreak, six people were from Alberta. No new outbreaks were reported in health care. In total 714 people in the health care system have been affected, 432 residents and 282 staff.

Currently, there are 906 active cases of the virus in B.C. with 4,253 people who have recovered since the start of the pandemic. There are 22 people in hospital and seven of those are in ICU.
