Kidney March still going ahead

PRINCE GEORGE – The Kidney Foundation’s annual walk will be taking place this year, but it is different this year. Instead of walkers converging on Kananaskis Country, they will stay in their home communities to do the 30-kilometre march.

Another difference: Northern BC has a team for the first time.

Maureen Paciejewski worked in the renal unit at University Hospital of Northern BC for 30 years. Once she retired, it was time to give back.

“I’ve seen a lot of faces, but I’ve seen a lot of the same faces for many years,” she says. “Given our small program in Prince George, we have the opportunity to follow these patients through all of the programs.”

And treatment in the North is even trickier as there are only three renal units. Kidney Disease Facts:

  • One in ten Canadians will develop chronic kidney disease in their lifetime
  • BC has seen a 53% increase in chronic kidney disease between 2010 and 2019
  • Males account for 55 of chronic kidney disease patients, females account for 45%
  • 78% of people waiting for an organ transplant are waiting for a kidney

Paciejewski and her team members will be doing their big walk on September 12, when they will tackle the 30-kilometre Centennial Trail.
