TYH: The importance of the perfect bed

Sep 1, 2020 | 8:00 AM

Finding the perfect bed for you may be more important than you think.

I found this out the hard way recently. We had a king-sized bed and it took me about five months to realize that since I had started sleeping on it, my sleeps had been absolutely horrendous. Can you imagine?! No perfect sleeps for five months!

I genuinely have no idea how I made it…but here we are. So this week we decided to speak with a physiotherapist to see how important the perfect bed actually is for you. “The big physio thing we always use for a lot of things is ‘it depends,'” said Jonathan Chuby, a physiotherapist at Phoenix Pharmacy.

“With beds it’s one of those situations where one bed might be perfect for somebody else but it might not necessarily be the perfect bed for the other person.”–Jonathan Chuby, physiotherapist at Phoenix Pharmacy

So when heading out on the hunt for a new bed, Chuby does have a few recommendations:

  • take your shoes off,
  • take off large, bulky layers of clothing so you can really just see what the mattress feels like,
  • and make sure to lay on the mattress as long as you can.

Chuby says in looking for the perfect mattress you want to find a mattress that is firm and supportive but is comfortable enough to fall asleep on.

Pillows are another big thing for Chuby, he says that finding the right pillow and not sleeping with too many pillows is really important for your posture.

“We spend a lot of time in bed, probably a third of our lives. So, it’s very important. You want to make sure you’re getting a restful sleep. If you’re not sleeping well then your body doesn’t heal as well, you don’t have as much energy it can really kind of set you off on a bad path. With something that we spend that much time in, it’s good to spend the money.”–Jonathan Chuby, physiotherapist at Phoenix Pharmacy

Signs that you’re bed may be too old or may be too soft for you include stiffness, sore neck, and an achy lower back. According to Chuby women prefer a slightly softer bed while men prefer a slightly more firm one.
