Hand sanitizer and face masks “the new norm” for school supplies

PRINCE GEORGE – School supplies shopping will look different for many parents this year, items that are flying off the shelves this year were not near as popular in years past.

“Now on the school lists we have added hand sanitizer, masks, and Lysol wipes,” says Lynn Kersey, General Manager of Staples in Prince George.

Northern Health Medical Officer Rakel Kling says while there is no evidence of COVID-19 being transmitted through things like pens and pencils, cleanliness will be a big theme for this school year.

“Hand sanitizer will be provided in schools, but having a little extra doesn’t hurt,” says Dr. Kling

A normal lesson to young children is sharing, although Dr. Kling was quick to point out that this year will not be the same case, instead, sharing will not be caring.

Northern Health says they encourage all parents and students to check with their school on what specific materials they may need to make the return to the classroom as safe as possible.

With so much uncertainty prior to school getting underway, Kersey says she thinks that has impacted shopping.

“People are waiting to buy their school supplies a lot later than usual,” says Kersey. “And when they are actually buying supplies, they’re buying a lot less.”

Kersey says instead of all the extras parents might typically buy their child, instead, she’s seeing just the basic materials being purchased.

Staples has alternate solutions for those concerned about entering the store, they are currently offering curbside pickup where an associate does the shopping for you, while you can wait in your car.

Another option is to have a look at the floor plan, which details where things are in the store so shoppers can create a ‘game-plan’ prior to walking in.

Kersey says while the store has plenty of hand sanitizer in stock, they are sold out of what she calls the “fun children’s face masks” but more are already on the way.
