PRINCE GEORGE–The Prince George Aquatic Centre will undergo some reparations with the help of both provincial and federal governments.

The province and the federal government are contributing a total of $6.3 million to help repair the ageing walls, roof and various mechanical systems at the Prince George Aquatic Centre to help extend its lifespan as well as make it more energy-efficient.

“By working together with all levels of government, we’re upgrading an important community space for people in Prince George, helping address climate change and building a cleaner, better future for everyone.”–George Heyman, B.C. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy

The investment will help transition one of Prince George’s single-largest emitters of greenhouse gases to one of the City’s most energy-efficient buildings. The centre which opened in 1998 has suffered damage from high humidity and air leakage into the walls and roof, all contributing to its deterioration and high operating costs. The project’s budget is set at $14.9 million, with construction set to begin in 2021.

“I want to express a sincere THANK YOU to the federal and provincial governments for these significant investments in our community,” – Lyn Hall, Mayor, Prince George

“These projects will provide jobs, enhance quality of life for residents, improve our community’s environmental performance, and extend the life of City infrastructure – these are all significant achievements,” adds Hall.

Federal funding for the project comes from the Green Infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada Plan, and provincial funding comes from the CleanBC Communities Fund.
