FORT ST. JOHN–Some students in Fort St. John will be kicking off their school year in a new school.

Anne Roberts Young Elementary opens its doors next week, the new school includes a child care centre and indoor multi-purpose rooms for community use.

“Last week, I had the opportunity to do a walk-through of the school. My excitement grew as I envisioned students operating in the bright learning spaces.”–Helen Gilbert, chair of the Peace River North board of education

The Province invested $31.1 million to build the new school, while the Peace River North School District contributed $300,000, for a total project budget of $31.4 million. Several portables will be removed from nearby schools or converted to other uses as a result of the new facility. The school has been completed quite earlier than expected, with it’s originally scheduled opening date set for January 2021.

The school will hold 505 students from kindergarten to Grade 6; the facility includes a neighbourhood learning centre with child care, before-and after-school care multi-purpose spaces for community use. In September 2018, the new Ma Murray Community school opened to accommodate 365 students. With the new Anne Roberts Young Elementary school also ready for students, the Province says, the Peace River North School District has the K-6 school capacity needed to serve Fort St. John’s families.
