OTTAWA — Cariboo-Prince George Conservative MP Todd Doherty has been named by new party leader Erin O’Toole to the Conservative Party shadow cabinet.

Doherty has been moved from the Transport role to Special Advisor to the Leader for Mental Health and Wellness.

“Since being elected in 2015, I have worked on advancing mental health issues nationally, raising awareness and removing stigma,” said Doherty on his Facebook page.

“As a veteran, former Veterans Affairs Minister and a founding member of the Board of Directors for the True Patriot Love Foundation, a charity that serves veterans and military families across Canada, Erin O’Toole understands the importance of ensuring our frontline heroes and those who serve our country and communities, have the resources they need to fulfill their mission and come home healthy. Erin is a tireless mental health champion and I’m proud to serve our Conservative team in this new capacity.”

Doherty is quite familiar with mental health issues, having sponsored Bill C-211, the National Framework for PTSD, which aims to curb what he’s called “an epidemic in suicides” among first responders.

Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies MP Bob Zimmer was not named to the shadow cabinet. He was previously the critic for Northern Affairs and the Northern Economic Development Agency.
