Mask Discount

Local business using discount to encourage face mask wearing

PRINCE GEORGE – There are two different perspectives for getting customers to wear face masks, make them mandatory, or use a more educational approach.

Books and Company downtown Prince George is giving their customers a break at the checkout for those wearing a face mask.

Assistant Manager at Books and Company John Sarrazin says he and the management team thought of the idea as a way to encourage face masks while avoiding confrontation.

This is in contrast to big-box retailers like Walmart and Superstore who have chosen a different route making face masks mandatory while shopping, with no discount for shoppers. Instead, it’s an expectation.

“Customers will notice at the checkout that if they’re wearing a face mask, they will receive 5% off their purchase,” says Sarrazin.

Sarrazin says the feedback from customers has been exactly what they were hoping for.

“When customers thank us for making them feel safe in our store, that’s what it’s all about,” says Sarrazin.

For Sarrazin, finding a way to keep their regular customers safe was always the goal, he says the demographic of those who frequent the store makes safety a big priority.

Books and Company say they hope to keep the discount going for as long as COVID-19 does.
