BCHL set to play in 2020-2021, one way or another

Sep 11, 2020 | 12:35 PM

Thursday the BCHL Board of Governors unanimously approved an alternative plan which will guarantee a 2020-2021 season.

The alternative plan will be put in place if the Provincial Health Office does not approve the available rink capacity which the league requested. (25%)

If that comes into fruition, the league will go ahead with a reduced schedule without fans.

For this to happen though, it will rely on player fees, government support, and sponsorship.

In a statement posted on the BCHL website, Chairman of the BCHL Board of Governors Graham Fraser stated, “Our main objective remains to play a season, no matter what, but our original goal of starting in December with 25 percent capacity in our buildings is in jeopardy.”

“Even if we end up going with the alternative, we may have the opportunity to introduce fans into the stands later in the season and into the playoffs, which would, in turn, reduce costs for the players and their families,” added Fraser.

“For the first time in our 60-year league history, we’re asking for players to pay an amount beyond their billet fees. This is solely caused by COVID-19 and we plan on going back to business as usual next season,” said BCHL Commissioner Chris Hebb in the same release.

Some teams have already begun training camps and an official exhibition schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
