Just one week after Spruce Kings defenceman Mason Waite announced his commitment to play Division 1 hockey, Prince George product Corey Cunningham did the same.

Last week Cunningham announced that following his time with the Spruce Kings he will be suiting up for Merrimack and playing NCAA Division 1 hockey.

“It’s definitely one of those moments where it’s like this is what you worked for. This is what you wanted. This is the next step. It’s overwhelming almost. It’s like one of those goals and you finally reach it, it’s like wow…I did it!” shared Cunningham to CKPG.

Despite not being able to visit the school like a normal recruiting year, the 19-year-old was able to see what the school was all about when talking to the coaching staff via Facetime or Zoom.

“They gave me the best possible tour of the school that they could give me without me actually being there,” added Cunningham.

“I just felt comfortable and my family felt comfortable in making a decision and I don’t have to go there to commit to a school. Just seeing how much they care and how great of an opportunity this is for me, I accepted the offer.”

For the soon to be 4th-year Spruce King, the announcement means he can now go out this season and just focus on hockey as he takes to the ice with his teammates in just a couple of weeks.

“It’s something nice to get off your chest,” explained Cunningham

“You are always wondering in the back of your head and you’re running out of years kind of thing. But, we are going to focus on the team goals here and hopefully, I can stay here and help the next few years here in PG.”

In his 3 seasons with the Spruce Kings Cunningham has compiled 36 goals and 26 assists.
