PRINCE GEORGE – There are several different kinds of berries that are common like blueberry or strawberry.
Then there is a berry that goes unnoticed and its starting to grow in popularity.
Recently, an Aronia berry farm has taken root near Prince George and this season the farm will be harvesting its first commercial crop.
The largest Aronia berry farm in Canada is located just outside of the city limits. In 2017 over 25 thousand Aronia bushes were planted on a field that was once hay.
The Aronia plant is considered hardy and tolerant of heat making it a perfect plant to be grown in our region. After some trial and error, The Aronia bushes are producing bunches of berries.
There are plans to develop more land and educate people on the berry native to North America.
Aronia Fields Farm plan to expand its berry production and make the berry available at local markets in the near future.
