It’s not over yet, BCWS says wildfires can still occur in the fall

PRINCE GEORGE—Just cause summer is over doesn’t mean wildfire season is over, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS).

In the Prince George Fire Centre areas of moderate and high fire danger are still being seen, as well as across B.C. BCWS says that cured grass is always a potential hazard come the spring or fall, and can be a cause of concern when the fire centre receives a minimal amount of precipitation, as the potential for a grass fire increases.

“Although the fire danger rating typically drops in the fall, it is important to remember that the risk of wildfires still exists, and that anyone conducting a burn needs to familiarize themselves with the open burning regulations.”–Rachelle Winsor, Fire Information Officer, Prince George Fire Centre

Prescribed and controlled burns can also be a potential cause for wildfires in the fall, although the BCWS says it does closely monitor all registered burns and is aware of who is burning and when.
