More crosswalk upgrades on Ospika

Sep 24, 2020 | 10:17 AM

PRINCE GEORGE— Construction on upgrades at the crosswalk at Ospika Blvd. and 1st Ave., began this morning.

The current crosswalk which simply consists of markings on the asphalt will be upgraded to a rectangular rapid flashing beacon design.

The design will allow pedestrians to push a button to activate flashing lights meant to alert motorists that someone is crossing. Upgrades are expected to be complete by early next month.

A similar upgrade was installed at the crosswalk on Ospika Blvd. at Davis Rd., earlier this month.

These crosswalk upgrades come after recommendations as part of the City’s first Pedestrian Crossing Strategy. The Strategy helped the City determine which crossings needed to be upgraded in order to meet the guidelines of the Pedestrian Crossing Control Guide by the Transportation Association of Canada.

202 City crosswalks were evaluated as part of the Strategy, 43 local crossings were recommended for upgrade or installation—26 upgrades to existing crosswalks and 17 new crosswalks.
