PRINCE GEORGE—The Prince George Resource District will be teaming up with the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) to conduct a fuel management project on Pilot Mountain.

The work is part of an ongoing fuel management treatment plan to promote forest health and reduce the risk of wildfires in the area. Work will be conducted periodically by local wildfire crews, when they are not actively fighting wildfires or undergoing training—the project is set to start this fall and is expected to last three years.

The BCWS says that smoke may be visible to surrounding communities, and that the Pilot Mountain Rd. may be temporarily closed for public safety. The project will also create “a critical fuel break around emergency communication infrastructure such as Fire Repeaters, which are used to enhance radio communications for firefighters in areas with poor coverage,” reads a release by the BCWS.

Risk Reduction Activities on Pilot Mountain may include:

  • removing hazardous trees and flammable shrubs;
  • thinning forested areas by cutting smaller trees and some mature trees;
  • pruning low-hanging tree branches to help prevent fire from moving into tree tops;
  • reducing woody debris and other fuels on the forest floor by piling and burning.

The BCWS says that all burning will adhere to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy Open Burning and Smoke Control Regulations, in order to ensure that the project will not impact surrounding communities air quality.
