More arenas opening

PRINCE GEORGE – The discussion was lengthy around the decision to re-open the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena and the CN Centre, the latter of which for both walking and ice-use.

Earlier this year, Council approved re-opening the Kin Centres and Administration reported that use in the three ice surfaces has increased by 18%.

For CN Centre, Administration reported the cost is not much different than those incurred when the Kin Centres were opened. To have the walking program in place, it will cost roughly $150,000.

However, there is a greater cost to adding two more ice surfaces will cost about $400,000.

Council heard that additional cost will push the City’s budget deficit to $6.8 million, or six percent on the tax levy.

“We’re in for a heck of a ride next year when it comes to the budget,” noted Councillor Garth Frizzell.

“This is the right thing to do, but there is going to be a cost attached,” added Councillor Cori Ramsay.

Prior to the discussion around re-opening the two facilities, Council heard from the Spruce Kings, who made the case for returning to RMCA. There were a number of occasions that Councillors asked about sharing the CN Centre, but that was dismissed due to What General Manager Mike Hawes referred to as branding issues. He suggested it would not be conducive to share one facility and the BCHL would not approve.

However, it was noted that the RMCA is 62 years old.

“I am very concerned that [the Spruce Kings] have no other option but to move into the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena,” stated Councillor Kyle Sampson, who suggested the hockey club should start thinking of its options into the future, given the age of the facility.
