SMITHERS – A confederate flag was found hanging on Main Street in Smithers on Saturday.

The flag was removed, and prompted Acting Mayor Casda Thomas, Chief Woos of the Wet’suwet’en, and MP Taylor Bachrach to denounce white supremacy.

Bachrach says in his Tweet that similar events happened twice while he was the Mayor of Smithers.

Thomas says in a Facebook post, “This does not represent our community. However, we need to recognize that racism can be found anywhere.”

The Wet’suwet’en say in their statement, “We urgently ask for the public assistance to help identify who placed the flag and they be held accountable for their actions.”

Bachrach said during a phone interview, “this is a very specific symbol, with a specific history. And it’s a symbol of hate and intolerance, and it has no place in our communities.”

Bachrach continues, “we need people to be more aware about the meaning of this particular symbol, and we need to do everything that we can to stamp out racism and white supremacy in our communities.”
