PRINCE GEORGE — University and college student unions across the province are getting the word out about the importance of voting in the upcoming election. The Take It Over campaign encourages them to take a pledge to vote in the upcoming BC election. Fifteen student unions representing 375,000 students across BC have signed off on the movement. In speaking with the CNC Student Union, there are still a lot of questions students have about election day and why it is important to vote.

“It’s a really big opportunity and a big responsibility too,” explained Sharanjit Kaur, Chairperson for the CNC Student Union. “Government is giving you the chance select leaders who are going to influence so many people.

“People say ‘I wish they had the power to do things’ but it all ends in ‘I don’t have the power’. This is the time where we are given the power and we can use it.”

Typically for post-secondary students, especially the younger ones, there is a lot of change happening in the immediate and long-term future. It can make the decision as to who to vote for a difficult one but – UNBC Political Scientist Jason Morris says despite what could seem like an overwhelming responsibility, it’s not too different from what voters of an older or more secure demographic will face.

“A young person might be thinking ‘I don’t have a class available’ and they can look to education funding. They can look to their elders who may be having health issues and there are long waiting lists, and they will be looking to how the economy looks so when they get their degree or diploma, they can get a job and start moving on to that next chapter in life,” Jason Morris, Political Scientist at UNBC said.

Morris reminds voters about how close the previous election was. And that it could have fallen a completely different way if more students had their voices heard.
