Mother dog rescued after being beaten and force-fed drugs

PRINCE GEORGE—A mother dog is receiving care after being beaten and forced to ingest alcohol and drugs.

According to a release from the BC SPCA a concerned citizen called in to report seeing a 4-year-old German short-haired pointer being abused and fed drugs and alcohol by her owner, as well as witnessing one of her puppies being abused. That’s when a search warrant was issued to seize the dog and her puppies.

“If it wasn’t for them (concerned citizen) this dog would likely still be in this very bad situation with her puppies and both her and their welfare would be poor.”—Alex Schare, Manager, North Cariboo District Branch, BC SPCA

The release goes on to say that a medical check was conducted on the mother dog and revealed fractures and scarring, evidence of past abuse. A toxicity test was also conducted confirming that she had in fact been fed something toxic.

“She is doing well and doing such a great job looking after her babies,” said Rachel Cook, the Animal Welfare Officer at the North Cariboo branch.

At the moment both the mom and her ten puppies are recovering at the home of a foster, thriving and gaining weight, and have just opened their eyes.

The puppies will be ready for adoption once they reach eight weeks, and the mother will be available for adoption once she has been spayed.
