VICTORIA—”Today we’ve reached a threshold, which is one that makes us pause,” said Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry this afternoon (Oct.8) regarding the more than 10,000 test-positive cases since the start of the pandemic.

In total 110 new cases were reported provincially this afternoon (Oct.8), including one epi-linked case, bringing the provincial total of test-positive cases to 10,066 since the beginning of the pandemic.

“We have 10,000 people that have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the province…and we know that’s an under representation of this virus…this number does give us reason for pause. It’s a reminder that many people have been impacted by this virus.”—Dr.Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer

Of today’s new cases five are in the Northern Health region for a total of 330.

Cases by health region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 3,693
  • Fraser Health: 5,174
  • Island Health: 223
  • Interior Health: 557
  • Northern Health: 330
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 89

At the moment there are 1,394 active cases in B.C., with 76 people in hospital and 17 of those in ICU. There is one person in hospital in the Northern Health Region today.

One new death was reported in Vancouver for a total of 245 deaths in B.C. to COVID-19.

“We know that 245 families have been impacted at a time when it’s very challenging to come together and to mourn and to celebrate peoples lives.”—Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer

She adds that British Columbians know what they must continue to do in order to keep case numbers low. Maintaining groups small, washing our hands, social distancing and wearing a mask when it’s not possible to social distance are all things British Columbians must continue to do, repeated Dr. Henry.

There are no new health care outbreaks and one was declared over for a total of 17 active outbreaks in the health care system; of those impacted 528 have been residents and 372 have been staff.

“Please, no matter what the numbers may be thank you for all you are doing.”—Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer

At the moment 3,139 people are under public health monitoring for being exposed to a known case of the virus. 8,398 people have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C.
