Parents reminded to speak with children about stranger danger after two incidents in Cariboo

PRINCE GEORGE—RCMP in the Cariboo have responded to two different events in the span of a week involving a suspicious person and a child, and are reminding parents to speak to their children about safety.

“It doesn’t appear that either of these incidents are related to each other, but both of them are concerning,” said Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, Senior Media Relations Officer for the BC RCMP to CKPG News.

“In both instances the children did what they should do.”—Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, Senior Media Relations Officer, BC RCMP

Earlier this week a child was reported to have been grabbed and dragged by an unknown person while on a walk with his parents in Quesnel, while the second incident took place in Williams Lake as a girl was walking home from school. Police say a man called out to her from his vehicle asking her to get in.

“It’s an opportunity to speak to your children,” said Staff Sgt. Shoihet. She suggests parents go through scenarios with their children and ask “What would you do if…”

“We encourage parents to have those open and honest conversations with their children when incidents like this occur. This is an opportunity to revisit conversations you may have had.”—Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, Senior Media Relations Officer, BC RCMP

Tips from the BC RCMP include yelling and calling out for help if you’ve been grabbed, fighting back and drawing attention to yourself in hopes that someone may see you. For incidences like the one in Williams Lake, children are recommended to not approach the persons vehicle, not speak to the person, and walk in the opposite direction even if it means walking away from home. Staff Sgt.Shohet suggests getting to the nearest business or school for safety and immediately reporting the incident to police.
