Bottle Returns

Bottle deposits 10 cents, regardless of size

PRINCE GEORGE – Return-It has made some changes to bottle deposits, and if you have not returned your bottles for a refund lately you may not have noticed.

On October 1st, containers over 1 litre came with a 10 cent deposit. There was a period where containers over 1 litre could still be returned for 20 cents, ending on October 11th.

Now, all beverage containers have the same 10 cent deposit, as mandated by the BC Government. This means that all beverage containers that Return-It already accepts will be refunded for 10 cents each, no matter the size or make of the container.

Allen Langdon, President and CEO of Return-It says, “we think it will make it easier for consumers to understand how much money they’re getting back.”

Langdon says it sets the stage to simplify the return system. He says, “we’re managing a billion containers a year, and that’s going to increase with the addition of milk in 2022.”

Currently, milk containers are not refundable in the Return-It system. However, the BC Government recently announced that it will be introducing milk containers as a part of its Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

Langdon says “what really drives people’s recycling behaviour is convenience and simplicity, and so we’re working to increase the accessibility of our system by introducing new collection points.”
