NASS VALLEY— A man is dead and the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigating after an incident on Oct.13.

Just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct.13 Nass Valley RCMP were called to the 4300-block of Monroe St. in New Aiyansh, north of Terrace. RCMP say they received a report of man stabbing another man—the two were known to each other.

When RCMP arrived the man suffering from stab wounds had already been transported to receive medical care, and the suspect was being calmed by neighbours.

Before officers were able to take the man into custody, it’s alleged the man harmed himself with a weapon and in an effort to take the man into custody, an officer deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon—a taser— and a struggle ensued.

The man was taken into police custody with the help of several civilians, and was placed in a police vehicle for transport to the local health clinic, as the BC Emergency Health Services were not readily available. Despite efforts to save the mans life, he died at the clinic.

Police say that the IIO has been notified of the incident and are attending the scene in order to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s death.
