PRINCE GEORGE – 100 years, you’re supposed to receive a 10-carat diamond. But for the Prince George Curling Club, granite rocks will do just fine.

“Being 100 years on October 14th of this year, when the first club was allowed by the City of Prince George, and it’s had a rich history ever since,” Prince George Gold and Curling Club General Manager Don McDermid

Originally started with a two-sheet outdoor facility just on the outskirts of downtown Prince George in 1920, the sport has seen some substantial growth over its years in the northern capital. McDermid admits, while the cancellation of the 2020 World Women’s Curling Championship, as well as the Kelly Cup possibly being cancelled, he’s optimistic about the growth of the sport in the city.

“Unfortunately with COVID-19, it may not be held this year. But it will build back up. It’s been exciting,” said McDermid, touching on the fact that there was one point where the Kelly Cup had over 150 teams competing for it.

In the most recent bonspiel for the Kelly Cup, 50 teams were competing. That marked an uptick in recent years.

Now in terms of the Kelly Cup, the fate of it is still more than a stone’s throw away.

“I mean it doesn’t get held until April. There’s a lot that could change before then. Currently, given the public health orders the way they are, we have all of our bonspiels on hold at this point,” said McDermid.

With changes made to the game itself this year in particular, it’s in a way fitting as we here in PG celebrate a game that’s both changed and adapted so much since that first stone was tossed here back in 1920.
