PRINCE GEORGE—”This year, it’s more important than ever to get a flu shot to protect against the spread of influenza,” reads a release from Northern Health (NH).

“If influenza spreads rapidly in communities at the same time as COVID-19 – it can overwhelm the healthcare system and put our loved ones at risk. The best protection is to get the flu shot this fall… and stay home if you are sick.”—Release by Northern Health

Most Northern Health flu clinics will begin applying the vaccine in the first week of November. The vaccine will also be available at pharmacies and doctor’s offices across the region.

“Making an appointment is strongly encouraged this year to help reduce line-ups and maintain safe physical distancing, due to COVID-19.”—Release by Northern Health

Northerners are asked to schedule a time to get their flu shot. The use of masks at NH clinics will be encouraged, and physical distancing will be in place. In some areas Northern Health’s Check in app is available to help make physical distancing a bit easier when waiting for an appointment. That is also the case at pharmacies like Hart Drugs. Pharmacist Curt Fowkes said, “we are giving [flu shots] out to people as we can. We’re booking appointments and asking people to wear masks. We are trying to keep crowds down and asking people to stay socially distanced so everyone can be safe when getting your flu shots.”

Flu shots are free for many people in B.C., including seniors, children, pregnant people, those with underlying medical or chronic health conditions, those who work with or come in close contact with higher-risk groups. To find a flu clinic or provider closest to you you can click here or call 8-1-1.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease that can lead to serious illness, hospitalization and death.
