CNC readies for international students after feds tweak border rules

PRINCE GEORGE – Normally for the College of New Caledonia in Prince George, the campus is filled with students from all over the world, the biggest source being India.

Now that can begin to happen again, even though President of CNC Dennis Johnson is still unsure of how many will actually be able to travel to Canada.

Canada is now allowing students to enter the country only if they have a valid student visa.

The students will be forced to follow through with the 14-day self-isolation rules following their entry to the country.

The rules amended by the Federal Government allow Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) that have a COVID-19 readiness plan to accept students as of October 20th.

Both UNBC and CNC qualify as DLIs meaning both can now receive new international students, which could also bring a boost to their bottom line.

CNC has especially been impacted hard financially by the lack of international students previously around 40% of their enrollment was from international students.

CNC President, Dennis Johnson thanks the Federal Government for their amendment to the rules, but he says it’s the rules elsewhere which will dictate when students can enter the country.

“We’re not sure what the exact numbers will be because there’s a number of other structural challenges to actually getting to Canada and CNC to study,” says Johnson.

Factors that can make the process challenging to become an international student include getting a student visa which Johnson says is still backlogged.

Johnson says that this fall CNC was down over 200 of their 350 students expected to enroll at the college.

CNC Student Union President Sharanjeet Kaur says she’s thankful for the government reopening the border to a group that deserves it.

Kaur, an international student herself says having access to campus for international students who are trying to learn from wherever their home may be, is challenging.

She says she hopes that the new rules will allow them to have a greater ability to use the school’s facilities.
