PRINCE GEORGE – A local author’s new book deals with mental health in a positive way. Robert Ziegler has been a therapist for many years now, as well as a self-published author of two books.

‘The Telling Method’ is his second novel, after his first, ‘A Banquet of Crow,’ was published in 2006. ‘The Telling Method’ is about two fiction writers, Charlie and Veronica, who are dealing with trauma when their therapist suggests an unconventional treatment known as narrative therapy.

Ziegler says that narrative therapy “is about your story about yourself. So, if you get a bad story as you’re growing up, you come to think of yourself that way, and narrative we begin to change the story of yourself.”

Ziegler has worked as a therapist in the Prince George region for many years, after he immigrated to Canada from the U.S. to avoid the Vietnam War. He says that his experience as a therapist helped inspire him to write ‘The Telling Method.’

He says “we had a lot of residential school survivors, so we did a lot of trauma work there. That’s when parts began to come up.”

He was also inspired by the absurdist play ‘Waiting for Godot’ by Samuel Beckett.

In ‘The Telling Method,’ Charlie and Veronica spend their days looking out of two separate windows opposite of each other as they work through their trauma by telling their own narrative.

Ziegler is self-published, because he did not want to spend years waiting around for a publisher to pick it up. It is also available at Books & Company.
