Early numbers show voter turnout down in B.C. election

VICTORIA — Turnout in Saturday’s (Oct. 24) provincial election was just over half of eligible voters, according to Elections B.C.

In a news release, Elections B.C. says it estimates about 52.4 per cent of registered voters cast ballots, including those who voted in advance, by mail, using absentee ballots or at voting stations on Saturday.

More people voted during the advance voting period than on election day. Elections B.C. says 670,324 votes were cast during the seven days of advance voting, while 546,877 people voted on the general voting day itself.

As of Saturday, Elections B.C. said it had received about 525,000 mail-in packages, or about 72 per cent of all packages that it had issued.

Voter turnout in the 2017 provincial election was 61.1 per cent.
